Lhasa de Sela R.I.P.
Labels: music 3 reflections
music has given me a huge part of the best experiences in my life and positive memories not directly connected to a concert are always connected to a song.
some singers mean so much to me that their voices seem to carry past (and present) feelings almost like a photo album.
out of those voices there are a few that are so special, so beautiful, so meaningfull to me that i will go wherever they go in the abstract world of feelings captured in sound - i will smile, cry or roar with them and be grateful for it.
the main voice in my ears since 2002; the one singer that has meant the most to me since i moved to canada and my life was radically changed because of it; the sometimes soft, sometimes rough voice of my dreams and fears has been that of Lhasa de Sela. i learned today that she died at the beginning of this year and ... i don't really know what to write.
i guess i thought that Lhasa's voice would be a companion for the next 20 years at least, like the voice of Björk has been for the past 18.
"thank you"
is so small and short.

my best friend, "We Are The World" & why i don't sleep so well
0 reflections
he's been in my life for over 20 years and he's a hero of mine.
an everyday guy, an everyday hero... the kind who shows me what kindness is and reminds me what humanity is. big words, i know, but he has been my best friend for a very long time and i still marvel at his nature and wish that more people were like him.
basically, i have him on a piedestal, which is a) an unfortunate tendency of mine, b) quite a feat after all those years and c) not always a comfortable place to be. i reckon that's part of the reason why he looks like an angry hedgehog when i tell him i love him or introduce him as "my best friend".
so to spare him, i thought i would spill my feelings all over this blog.
these days i'm waiting. his gorgeous, quirky woman is pregnant and the wonder is going to happen any day now. i've been secretly praying for years - first for him to actually meet her (which, when it happened, was the kind of meeting that would give you nausea if it was in a movie, it was that much against the odds) and then for them to have at least 81 children.
i'm apparently waiting even in my sleep. i wake up every night somewhere between 4 and 6. the first night it was because someone rang my doorbell and since her parents are staying with me, it's perhaps not so strange that i jumped out of bed, thinking it was the cab to rush them to the hospital. the next night it was a far away ambulance. then simply a door closing somewhere. last night i have no idea why i jumped out of bed...
the crazy thing is that i'm absolutely certain every time and that the entire spectrum of my feelings are reeled in within minutes as if i had become a fishing rod (it usually takes me a looong time to wake up). surprise -- excitement -- terror -- awe -- happiness and finally "We Are The World" and not a dry eye in sight.
he is my best friend. they have asked me to be Auntie S. i do believe that this is going to be the next Siddhartha. but still...
i really wish for this to be done with.
(just not today 'cause who would want the same birthday as Nena?)
(ooh! and not tomorrow, 'cause another one in our clan has claimed that one more than half a century ago)
please let there be baby by the end of the weekend...

fav music in fav setting

one of my favourite bands, Efterklang, released a new album and to my surprise it's on 4AD - the label that used to be on the back of much desired records way back when i still thought sadness was the only form of beauty.
Efterklang did a 4AD session with some of the songs... i'm posting it here, fully aware that it's not much to look at... but it's recorded in one of my favourite venues and hey, listen to these pretty songs!
Efterklang at vega, copenhagen
i find the music to be more accessible than their earlier work, some of it is simple pop but i think it'll grow on me. and i still adore his voice.
and Efterklang = reverberation/echo
